HISTORY
Challenges Farmers Face In the Herdsmen-farmers Crisis
In many northern, middle-belt, and even southern parts of Nigeria, farmers have struggled with escalating conflicts involving Fulani herdsmen, whose cattle often graze on farmland, destroy crops, and lead to violence. This has created severe insecurity for farming communities. Key issues include:
Trespass and Crop Destruction:
Herdsmen moving cattle through farming areas damage fields and reduce crop yields. Farmers often lose significant investments when their crops are eaten or trampled.
Violence and Killing:
There have been multiple deadly attacks attributed to armed herdsmen in states like Benue and Nasarawa, with dozens killed in incidents such as the Odugbeho and Nasarawa massacres.
Displacement and Fear:
Ongoing clashes have forced many farmers to abandon their lands, undermining food production and local livelihoods
Competition for land and Resources:
Environmental changes (like drought and desertification) and population growth have pushed herders further south and into fertile farmland, intensifying competition for scarce pasture and water.
Overall, the conflict disrupts food security and deepens poverty in rural communities that depend heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods.
FAPAN
Famers Protection Association Of Nigeria (FAPAN) is a Non-Governmental umbrella body representing farmers across Nigeria. It was established to Organize, Empower, and give farmers a Unified voice on agricultural and policy issues
Purpose Of FAPAN
To mobilizes farmers on issues of food security, agricultural support, and sustainable farming practices. It works to advocate for policies that protect farmers’ rights and improve their condition.
Support and Coordination:
While not a security force, FAPAN provides a platform for farmers to report challenges (including land disputes and insecurity) and to engage government and stakeholders for solutions.
Empowerment Initiatives:
The organization has launched farmer identification systems and databases to strengthen collective representation and access to services, and encourages collaboration to boost productivity and resilience.
In the context of the herdsmen–farmers crisis, FAPAN and similar farmer groups help highlight the impact of insecurity on agriculture, encourage government responses, and support farmers in accessing resources and advocacy to protect their livelihoods
